How much should I feed my adult dog?

A good rule of thumb is to feed 2–4% of your pet's body weight per day. Smaller dogs need a higher percentage of their body weight; larger dogs need a smaller percentage. Split the daily portion between morning and night.

  • A 10 lb dog eats about 2 to 2½ lbs per week (~10 lbs / month)
  • A 25 lb dog eats about 5 lbs per week (~20 lbs / month)
  • A 50 lb dog eats about 8 lbs per week (~32 lbs / month)
  • A 75 lb dog eats about 10½ lbs per week (~42 lbs / month)
  • A 100 lb dog eats about 13½ lbs per week (~54 lbs / month)

These are guidelines — food needs vary. Observe your pet and adjust the amount to maintain a healthy weight. Always consult your integrative veterinarian, especially for puppies and pregnant or nursing dogs.

Transitioning from dry food? Significant weight loss in the first week is common and mostly water weight. After that, aim for no more than 1–2% body-weight loss per week, and work with your vet to monitor.

How much do I feed my puppy?

Feed puppies 2–3× the amount an adult dog of the same weight would eat. For example, a 10 lb puppy eats 2–3× what a 10 lb adult dog would. Feed very young puppies 3–4 times per day; older puppies generally do fine with twice-daily feedings.

Age, current weight, anticipated adult weight and breed all play a role — observe your puppy closely and adjust as needed.
